Jenny, you understand this, right?

Following BYU basketball is an emotional rollercoaster. And not the fun kind. The kind that you get so hyped up about and you stand in line excitedly and nervously. And then once you're on the ride, it's one big mood swing. Up. And down. And up. And then a REALLY big down. The kind that makes you sad and slightly upset at the same time.
And guess what. It's a seasonal disorder. Not just a one time thing.
But hey, things are looking up. I have 3 tests this week, and I really do not feel like studying at all. But it's really sunny outside and I love it. I wish summer was here. Then I'd be swimming abd boating instead of riding the basketball roller coaster.
Oh and my bracket is completely ruined. Thank you Kansas, Georgetown and Villanova. Shape up next year, will ya?

Haha

Dear girl sitting next to me in the polka dot sweater,

You are dozing in class. Your nodding off and head bobbing is greatly amusing to me. Your ever so slightly noticeable snoring/heavy breathing is tolerable. However, you crossed the line when you put your head on my shoulder. I don't really make a good pillow. And, I don't even know you! But no worries. Your embarrassment at what you had done more than makes up for the uncomfortable weight you placed on my shoulder.
Thank you for the laugh. And, maybe go to bed a little earlier?

Haha,
Natalie

p.s. I even considered taking a picture of you to post on here, but I decided that would be too mean. My apologies for thinking about it.

Two quick things before I go bust out a ridiculously long review sheet.

1) I am done filing taxes! Booyah.

2) I got a 92 on my stats test.
Thank you Chili's for helping me celebrate that small, yet important victory on a normal Wednesday night. Now back to focusing (with some blog stalking mixed in).

Oh to know...

Hands down most valuable thing I've learned in my 4 years of college? That the more I learn, the more I realize I have yet to learn.

I guess we all really should be life-long learners.

And I also need to have better study habits. Like maybe actually taking notes in history instead of blogging. But SeƱor Brown is just oh so blah. No offense to him, of course. I just cannot pay attention today. So blogging it is.

bowl me over.

So every Thursday night, we made our way to an alley that contained balls and pins for our play. (well, not mine - theirs.) I watched, week in, week out, the good, the bad, the awful. And trust me. It was most definitely worth it.

This team of bonediggers won the championships. They are the best bowling team that BYU has to offer. They played big when it counted. And they came away with these awesome pieces of art:

So, you ask, were these worth an entire semester's worth of Thursdays?

I think YES.

about TIME. sheesh.

I did it. For real this time. I took a whopper of an ANATOMICAL test at the infamous and awful testing center, known loathingly as Heber. AND I came away with a solid 92% on the multiple choice with a "fantastic!" written next to my number on the score screen.

Can I just say I've been waiting for a moment like this for 4 years? I've gotten good grades like this before, but not on a test for my major. Just on little side tests like ethics, and judaism, and d&c, and english. but never on a test for a major class. BOOOOOOOYAH.

I'm pretty peacock proud right now. Except I have yet another test (for my major, yet again) tomorrow before I can claim my freedom for the holiday weekend.

Time to get off my proud pedestal and back to the old grind. I just wanted to document this moment for posterity's sake (and my sanity's - for when finals roll around and I feel utterly stupid again). And I thought this picture was strangely appropriate:

RSVP please.

I'm taking a break from anatomy and I thought I would share this gem with you. Written in the margin of my anatomy notebook was this: "Everybody is invited to think."
And you are. So please do.

Think about stuff. Think about your family. Think about the words you say. Think about the things you do. Think about your attitude. Think about your blessings in life. Think about the opportunities of life. Think about love. Think about beauty. Think about nature. Think about all the wonderful things in life. Think about the answers we have to life's great questions. (If you're still thinking about them, go here.)
But please. Start thinking. And appreciating.

I did it.

In story form:
My Fight For Freedom:
How Facebook Sucked My Life Away
Dear World,

I did it. The feeling right now is incredible. Liberation + no more temptation = a feeling of elation. Today at 11:07 a.m., on the 2nd floor of the HBLL, I deleted my facebook. And let me tell you, the result has been wonderful. Even before the actual deletion, I was on such a high from deciding to do it that I paid attention in all of my classes - the whole time. And enjoyed them.

I've had a couple friends ask me why I did it. Here are a few of my reasons: A) I'm addicted to it. I can't control myself - in both how often I log on and how much time I spend each time I log on. It takes up so much of my time -- time that is supposedly valuable, but that I'm not valuing very much if I'm spending it all online. B) I'd rather have a relationship with real people instead of a machine. C) I'm pretty sure my real friends are the ones who have my cell phone number. The rest are all just the victims of innocent stalking. And I'll sacrifice them for a real conversation with a real person. D) I still have an email and a cell phone and skype and a blog. Despite what it looks like, I'm not ostracizing myself from the rest of the world.

I have had my facebook for over 5 years. I got facebook when you had to be invited to have a facebook. Back when they didn't have an inbox, or a news feed, or quizzes, or put photo albums up or chat. Or a lot of stuff. Back when this guy was the logo of facebook:

And at first, it was a fun, easy way to connect with your friends without feeling like you're sending an intrusive email. And if you didn't have a cell phone, it was quick and easy. And had fewer numbers to remember.

But it soon escalated. To the point where I was/am addicted. This I will freely admit. I would check it not once or twice a day. More like once or twice an hour. And after an hour of being on it in the library, or at work, I'd finally get off and not be able to remember the things I needed to accomplish for the day. I was more interested in seeing people's lives and critiquing them and feeling involved from afar instead of being real friends.

I liked what this man wrote in a NYtimes article (Feb. 9, 2009) about the whole "25 things" fad that went around at the start of this year :

"The idea that real intimacy is achieved by telling 25 people about the first time you saw a horse or the name of your kindergarten boyfriend is, admittedly, worthy of ridicule. But in her refusal to participate, Ms. B may have unwittingly touched upon the very thing that makes the exercise so appealing: the fact that we can learn intimate details of a person's life without actually having to interact with them. 'I've gotten 25 random things notices from people that absolutely fascinated me," said Mr. C, the actor. 'But I'm pretty certain I wouldn't want to be stuck on a bus with them telling me these things.'"

And as much as I love stalking people and seeing pictures, I'd rather be taking the pictures or be in them instead of just looking at them. I did have the hardest time convincing myself to delete it. I've actually been considering it for a couple months now. And when I actually told someone I was going to do it. I told them I was going to delete it tomorrow. But then I talked to someone else about it and he said to do it right now -as in: as-soon-as-we-sit-down-at-the-table-in-the-library-now. So we did. And I honestly am glad I did. I'm glad I have my life back. Or at least the chance to have one.
From the same article as above: "'Whatever happened to talking to people face-to-face?' she wrote in an e-mail message. 'Since when do we have to give our friends synopses or overviews of our lives? Anyone who wants to know 25 things about me can call me
or ask me.'"
And that's pretty much how I feel now. If you really care about me and want to know about my life, you can have my cell phone number. And we can talk about it.

reason #832 why I love college

A) it rained last night
B) we didn't have a tent
C) or waterproof sleeping bags
D) we did have a sheet of PAINTER'S PLASTIC
E) between the 4 of us, we maybe got 6 hours of sleep
F) about 1,000 people cut us in line to get into GameDay
G) we were the first people at Kneaders
H) we went to bed for real around 8 a.m.
I) i wouldn't trade last night
for the world.

Want a picture of our campsite?
I know, you're jealous.
but you shouldn't be.

"nice wigs, weirdos" - best comment of the night by a stranger

So.....it is a plain and simple FACT that when we get together, the laughing starts and it doesn't really stop. Today was another example of that.

4 girls + one crazy Halloween store + 10 minutes of decision + 20 minutes of hysterical laughter in the bathroom = 4 girls in wigs walking around the mall with NO shame for priceless memories.

I would not have it ANY other way. photo shoot tomorrow?
i think yes!

"October is Scary."

October is here!! Fall has semi-erupted here in Cougar Town.
Football every weekend, crunchy leaves on the ground. It was supposed to SNOW yesterday. Thank the slight-above-freezing temperatures that it didn't. Please bid farewell to smores, sunshine, and sleeping in and welcome in with open arms the chilly days where sweaters/cardigans, boots and hot chocolate are regularly on display. Oooohhh, so excited for Hot Apple Cider and PUMPKIN rolls!!

I guess it's true what some old wise guy named Albert Einstein said. "Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted."

NOW, what should I be for HALLOWEEN?

I don't want to close my eyes..... 'Cause I don't want to miss a THING.

I love college.

For lots of reasons.

But right now, I love it for this one:

Sometimes it is a good idea to take a break from studying.... and go stalk someone. And it is still as fun as playing cops and robbers or hide and seek back when we were in the third grade.
EVIDENCE of our success?Boom. Roasted.
Good thing Sadie is a cool cat and is totally fine with the fact that we just stalked her and Bryce. Even though she doesn't know us. AT ALL.

Also, the fact that there is a guy sitting behind me in linear algebra doing his homework in the back of the class with his ipod in. TURNED UP SO LOUD EVERYONE CAN TELL WHAT SONG IT IS. First up on the shuffle-di-duffle list, "I don't want to miss a thing" -- definitely got everyone's attention. A little Hilary/Haylie Duff combination came up next. Then some Enya. Now a little Micheal Buble.

I'm just waiting for him to start singing out loud!

But this is definitely making math go by faster than normal. Hallelujah.

I ♥ college.

Friday, September 18, 2009

I hate to brag, but this is like a 100% on a math test that gets put on the refrigerator...

So you know how in high school there were times when you didn't really have to try and you were still smart? (I'd like to thank my mother and father for passing on the smart genes!) And you just had a blast because classes were full of your friends and you played sports after school to stay entertained? Weekends were about fun and not finishing leftover homework? And the only really stressful part of the year came from finals and AP exams? Yeah, those were the glory days.

Then you get a bucket of ice cold water in your face which locals around here call COLLEGE. Imagine the one smart kid in all your high school classes who knew ALL the answers. Then think about 30,000 other kids who were the brains of their high schools. Put them all together and you get BYU.

Classes here are HARD. All of a sudden I feel really really stupid. You still have the same old smart kids who still know all the answers. And you look around and wonder if you are really where you should be. How did they get the email with the answers and you didn't?

EXCEPT, today I got to be one of them. I got to taste the elixir of fame and knowledge for about 8 seconds. And it was glorious. I got to be the smart kid who gets the gold star next to their name. 8 seconds of the "YEAH, that was me. The teacher listened to my answer and said, 'exactly.' Yes, that is the taste of grandeur right there." And then, only a simple fleeting 8 seconds later, it's gone.

And you are left with a big gaping hole of wondering if that moment will ever come again.
If I have anything to do with it, then it will.

Why can't a skeleton lift weights? --- He's all bone and no muscle.

Question: how many bones are in the human body?
(my hand SHOOTS in the air! pick me pick me oh please pick me!)
Answer: TWO HUNDRED AND SIX. (if it's an adult. children, please add 100 to that number.)

And I've spent the past two weeks learning every nook and cranny of every single one of them.
How's that for AWESOME homework?

This is Cesaer. He and I have grown very close lately. In fact, I devoted two hours of my day yesterday to simply just staring at him. Not adoringly. More like loathingly. Although I love and appreciate how incredibly interesting he is, I would much rather NOT have an exam on him in two days. With every indistinguishable marking as a possible test question. I'd rather love and cherish him from afar - with no exam and no cramming and no tibial tuberosity or sustentaculum tali to worry about. (I will give you a dollar if you can tell me where the sustentaculum tali is without looking it up or asking anyone. *science majors not included.) But as soon as this is over, the peripheral nervous/upper extremity muscles begin.... woe is me.

Dear Cesaer,
As much as I absolutely ADORE you, I am pleased to announce that starting Thursday at 10:00 a.m. MST, we will no longer be together. I'd like to have my life back instead of slowly becoming a skeleton like you.

"Do you like hip-hop? I got an album --- and I never shot nobody."

So sometimes I miss Hawaii. I miss the lazy, dream-filled nights. I miss the random connections we made with the people at the hostels. The people with whom our paths crossed for that miniscule moment in time. I miss hiking around mountains and being inches away from the edge of the cliff - hiking for hours until suddenly the waterfall appears and makes the 2 hours in the rain worth it. Conversations on hotel rooftops. Being in flip-flops and a bathing suit, no matter where or when it is. I miss not having to be somewhere at a specific time. Stretching out on the beach with a book that I don't actually have to think about reading. Hammocks made out of parachutes. Riding on the bus and not caring how long it takes to get there. I miss the friendly alohas and the breathtaking flowers. I miss the sound of the waves.

But then, I come back to Provo and realize how much I've missed the deadlines, and the pressure, and the stress. (I know, I'm crazy. But I secretly love having a semi-fast-paced life.) And the sense of pride. And my bed. And hot showers. And not having sand in every single crevice of my skin and on every article of clothing I own. I missed Grover and being able to drive (not that I'm able to drive now anyways......) I missed face-to-face conversations - somehow texting and phone calls don't make the cut after awhile.

However. I did not and do not and will not miss from both Hawaii AND Provo: grades, offices, big casts on my leg that make me walk 103293483920 times slower than normal, singles wards, creepy old men offering me a shack to stay in, creepy old men telling me about the 14 times he saw Jesus on Larry King, creepy old men telling me how he hates Christians, creepy old men telling me that I could be wife #5, drunk spaniards, $2 value menus, and linear algebra.

On a completely different note, I love BYU football.

Happiness is all around you, laughing with you, and loving you.

I think growing up with 10 kids in my family has made me love being surrounded by people. Moving to Utah was one of the hardest things for me to do because I had to go from having 9 or so people in the same house with me to none. It was kind of depressing. Okay, it was really depressing. I missed having both Anna and Emma come sleep with me after they'd woken up in the middle of the night (Thank you, Dad, for telling them to go sleep with me, instead of letting them crawl in with you). So, I solved that problem. I got two extra big pillows to sleep with, besides my regular one. And I put one between me and the wall, and the other I snuggle with. And then everything is just dandy! Still not quite the same thing, but definitely a lot closer.
But pillows aren't exactly the most animated.

So I've tried to convince la roommate to get a pet.
I wanted a kitten, she vetoed. She wanted a rabbit, I vetoed.

(speaking of cats:
I made a new friend last night! And he almost followed me home. I had to run a couple blocks to escape his interest. He looked a little like this:

I named him Felix. But sadly, sadly, someone in my apartment would have regretted my bringing my new friend home with me. But their allergies would have loved me. LOVED me.
)

Alas, since Felix will not be joining our household, we have instead agreed to the open adoption of two aquatic creatures that will be moving in momentarily. They might already have names? If not, I want to name one Sergei and the other Hosea... or maybe Nina?

Anyways, I'm pretty stoked.

Some are scared to fly so high. Well, this is how we have to try - have no envy, no fear. j.radin

"One day you will feel like you know what you are doing."

That is the piece of wisdom I read today while getting my daily fill of the news. And my first thought was 'Really? I don't believe it.' I think the older I get, the more I realize I don't know. I've been blessed to be working at the same job for the past 2 years. And I do know a lot.

My list of accomplishments from this job include (but definitely are not limited to): interior design, prop building, binder assembling, becoming a copy-making fiend, preparations dances, scheduling - then re-scheduling - a building, computer hacking skills, repair skills-including anything from pool cues to printers, safety and security, and teaching my managers how to call people anonymously, etc....
But, as comfortable and confident as I sometimes feel, I still don't know everything. Most of the time, I can find the answer to a question and help someone, but there are still a lot of things that I don't know.

Well, today I realized that I already knew the most important thing about my job. I know how to help someone. Even if I don't know the answer. A big part of having a job like mine, at least to me, is your customer service. I think it's HUGELY important - the way you treat people is the reflection of the love and respect you have for them. Especially when you don't know them.

Today, while trying to track down a lost order from our supplier's warehouse, the girl on the other end of the phone wasn't being particularly helpful. Anyways, after talking to her for a while and then being put on hold for at least 15 minutes, I realized that there was no point in me getting frustrated at her. It didn't help anyone. Least of all me. And maybe talking on the phone with her and letting her figure things out will help her become more able to help another customer faster and more easily the next time around.

I guess everything we do comes from a choice. And I just want to choose to be happy. I like being happy. So even if I never ever feel completely confident in myself, even if I never learn anything else, that is all I need to know - everything we do comes from a choice. And we can choose to be happy.

And in regards to that, I do need to work on being happier. No more disgruntled grumpiness in the mornings was step one. Although, I'm doing an okay job, right Kinsey?

That which we persist in doing becomes easier for us to do; not that the nature of the thing itself is changed, but that our power to do it has increased.

Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket - Never let it fade away.

Last night as I lay in bed and the lines between reality and dreaming started to blur, my mind was filled with an incredulous story that seemed so.... cockamamie to me. Unbelievable and fallacious. And yet, I could not resist putting it here for you all to enjoy. (Parts are true, parts are not: believe what you want.)

Once, there were these two young, amazingly beautiful, charming, witty and knowledgeable girls named Yesnik and Acceb. Their grandfather was one of the noblest in the land, but all of his wealth had been inherited by other descendants, so these girls had to settle for the distinct privilege of being recognized as the belles of their boroughs. Although Yesnik and Acceb lived miles away from each other, they were given the opportunity to spend a very small amount of time together once every two years.

This year, unfortunately Yesnick and Acceb had their time shortened due to previous social engagements. So all they had together was one night. That night was the time for divulging secrets and re-enacting adventures! Tonight - this one memorable night - Yesnik and Acceb decided to finally exchange their sagas of their individual quests for the elusive falling stars.

Now, it is important to give you this sidenote: Ever since the beginning of time, it has been the goal of each young lady who lives and breathes to catch as many falling stars as possible. In some vast lands, it is an honor to have the most falling stars. In other different lands, you are revered and esteemed for only catching a small amount, and shunned for catching more than is considered your fair share - for let's be honest, that can be misconstrued as being avaricious and greedy. All lands view falling stars as precious gifts and catching them is more than just a rite of passage - it is a wondrous opportunity and an honored privilege to experience.

You must also understand that Yesnick and Acceb differed in age by only a few years. As both Yesnik and Acceb began to relate their tales, both were reluctant to admit to the other the amount of falling stars each had acquired. But as the stories of each conquest were revealed, Yesnik and Acceb could only exclaim that they had also had done what the other had accomplished. One by one, star by star, through the complexities they had separately endured, Acceb and Yesnik only grew closer together - through caring for and saving the life of a child to competing and conquering challenges issued by others,. As their caboodle of stars continued to proliferate, so did their love and caring for each other.

Yet, as much as they loved each other and their bond of almost-sisterhood, there was a slight sense of competition between them. When it came down to finally giving the exact specifications of how many falling stars they had each amassed, they agreed to tell each other at the same time. On the count of 3, they both said their number of falling stars. And which of these do you think took the prize? Well, my dear reader, neither. At the same time, both Yesnik and Acceb called out the exact same number - twenty-nine. A number to be applauded, indeed. And because of their exceedingly high successes, they were lauded as the most talented and accomplished ladies in all the land.

THE END.

Well, folks, I laid there in my bed thinking about my collection falling stars. And I take comfort in knowing that the sky is so vast and filled with balls of gas burning billions of miles away and that there are more available if I choose to seek them out. And I think I'm okay with just having my two falling stars right now. I'll leave the shining, shimmering and being the heroes to Yesnik and Acceb.

All the Bells and Whistles....

(I think girls will like this post more than the guys. Sorry - It's just what came out.) Apparently it is the season for weddings! Which makes me happy. And a teeeeeeny bit sad because I know that I now take second place to someone else. But I'm okay with that so I'm mostly really really happy.

Ever since I was about 16, when there would be a wedding reception at the church where I went to seminary, I was sent back with a camera to take photos of how everything was decorated. Just so that I would have an idea of what I might want when I was old enough to get married.

Well, folks, heads up. I am now 21 years, 4 months, and one day old. Somewhere in the back of my head it is screaming that there is no way that I can get married now. I mean, I'm ONLY 21. And yet.... And yet, I've watched so many fall in love, get engaged, and have incredibly beautiful weddings/marriages that I can't help but want one of my own. And I've had a lot of people suggest to me that maybe I should get married. My parents, my little brothers, people from back home who know how BYU is, everyone out here who is married. Don't get me wrong. I do want to get married. But there are some important things to think about - it being the right time, right place, right person, right authority - these ALL play a role in it.

However, Christian did tell me that he had a dream that I got engaged, AND he had to ask me if it was true or not. So either he's a fortuneteller or his dream was creepily realistic. So, since I've been preparing myself for this with photographs since high school, I decided to share some of my plans with you all (along with some tangents).

1) I found the wedding dress I want. Alas, I just found out it will cost more than a semester of tuition. Ergo it is out of the picture. So I shall have to restart the search again.
2) I love love LOVE looking at wedding pictures. You can practically feel the happiness OOZING out of their smiles. It's like Love is tangible. And since I always want what I can't have, I want that. So that's where I get tons of my ideas.
Here's the cake I want:
Not really, but kind of. I think it would be super fun. And that's the important part of the wedding, right?

Here are some flowers that I LOVE: except for the roses. I'm not such a big fan of roses.

But I am currently obsessed with dark purple.

And since I've gotten to look at so many rings lately, here's my current favorite:I don't know. I go back and forth. (And since I'm a girl, I pretty much like anything that is sparkly.)

Anyways, the rest of the plans are currently under review because I change my mind a million times a day. So, here's what I know about the guy I'm bound to end up with. I went back to my notes from when I was 16 and found these: Please read and enjoy. (And please please remember, I'm not 16 anymore, but I was when I took these. Way before facebook quizzes came around.)

Your type is the Preppy
If he's conservative, friendly, and clean-cut, he's just your type! You fall hard and fast for him. Your guy's refined, runs with a cool crowd, and has a little cockiness thrown in for good measure. He's just cool, calm, and collected. Another quality that draws you to him is his ambition. He aims for success and follows whatever path will lead him there. You respect how he always makes time for his friends and has a tendency to be a little goofy. With this cheeky,well-groomed guy, you can rest assured that you'll live the American dream!

Huzzah for the American dream! haha

You are a Hopeless romantic
Chances are you love soft music, candlelight, and long walks on the beach at sunset. Crying at sappy movies (your favorite kind) is a given — a box of tissues is a must — and you've have had your wedding planned since grade school.
(HA - close. More like high school.) You're looking for a deep relationship — a soul mate. Traditional and sympathetic, guys love that they can open up to you and talk to you about their feelings, their past, and their hopes for the future. How can a suitor win your heart? By romancing you. Sending you flowers, surprising you with a picnic lunch, or going for a horse-drawn carriage ride. Before you know it, you'll be creating a life-long love story. (More like for eternity, not just life-long.)

Natalie, you find love in a Fairy Tale
Glass slippers, traveling minstrels, knights in shining armor. These are some of the classic components of fairy tales. And when it comes to your real-life love life, you'll take 'em in the form of candy and flowers, poems describing your beauty, tiny velvet boxes, and the like.
(I'm liking the velvet boxes part. And the flowers.)You sometimes have to work to get your head out of the clouds, but your optimistic spirit and love-conquers-all attitude helps you deal with the good and bad that life might throw your way. As long as you can spot a poison apple when it knocks on your door, you'll always be able to find your happy ending.

Natalie, Prince Charming is the man of your dreams
A hopeful romantic, you're looking for that special guy who believes in fairy tales too. You want the best for yourself and those you love. And you're
happy to go the extra mile to make sure everything works out in the end. So even if it means kissing a lot of frogs, you won't settle until you've found the prince you've been looking for. And that's sure to make a happy ending.

Well, if you have made it to the end of this post, I'm sorry. Those last 4 paragraphs were probably a huge waste of your time. And mine too, when I was 16. And I am happy now. I love my life. Even the parts that seem so unsure at times. Being where I am today is so, so much different and better than I pictured it. But maybe that's the best part.

dear Boy,
if you are the man i end up with, i want you to know that i am trying to be the best person i can be now. sometimes i feel like you will never show up. but if you promise to show up soon, i promise to let you help plan the wedding. with no zebra cake. and i promise to love you forever. literally.
love,
Me.
